Most Christians I know are able to control their speech, even when their day is going badly."

Oh please. Fricking? You're taking her to task over fricking? So why not nail her on her "dang its" and "poopers"? Or do those words actually fit within the Christian lexicon? Seriously, I don't think Jesus is going to send her to hell for the odd "fricking" comment. And trust me on this, Anony...I've heard a hell of a lot worse coming out of a nice Christian woman's mouth before.

"If you're supposed to be like Jesus, yes you'd have gay friends; and Jesus would probably have a drink with them too."

Jeez, that's nice that He would do that. Good for Jesus, being so open to the LGBT community. Hopefully, Jesus wouldn't be as quick to judge as some people (yeah, I'm looking at YOU here, Anony) being the son of God and all that. I find it funny that so many of those who claim to be Christians, who have those commandments to follow and those other bits of wisdom such as "Judge not others lest you yourself be judged" tend to be the first ones to jump that fence. How about you come out from behind that Anonymous tag and hold your life up to the same light as Pat so fearlessly does? Think you'd make the cut? Think no one would take offense to something you think or say or do?

"My respect for you has gone down a notch or two just because of that."

Yeah, I'm sure Pat's losing a lot of sleep over that.

"I believe your whole problem with being sick in Regina had nothing to do with hamburgers or dry air. It stemmed from your body not knowing how to go from 1000 mph to 30 mph in such a short time. It has not been allowed to relax, then when it had the perfect opportunity it couldn't."

Definitely. Had nothing to do with another person getting food poisoning, or the change in climate or being trapped in a flying tube full of people all breathing in each others' microbes. Nope, it's all about the fact that she couldn't relax.

Anyone ever tell you you have a skewed worldview, Anony?

Tobin Elliotthttp://tobinelliott.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8864636609920150852.post-42308666223262856842012-10-16T12:34:01.424-04:002012-10-16T12:34:01.424-04:00I'm sorry, Anonymous, but I've just got to...I'm sorry, Anonymous, but I've just got to take you to task on several points in your comment.

"I wonder why in the world you need to write a blog entry to justify being sick and not taking pictures."

Is this what you read? Because I just read a fun blog about an independent woman that went on vacation. Yeah, she talked about getting sick. It happens. It's a blog. I didn't see her trying to "justify" anything.

"Do you only have self-worth when you're so busy that you can hardly function, as so often you indicate? Why does your life have to be full beyond capacity? Why do you think your life has value only when you're busy - whether it's work, writing, the gym, church, the dog, friends, travelling, or whatever. You need your coffee or power drinks to get you through any given day."

Don't know what you do all day, Anony, maybe you just chill and read other people's blogs. But Pat's a busy woman. She works a full-time job, she writes novels on the side and travels and interacts with the world. She's young and she's wringing every experience out of life that she can. Can YOU justify to the rest of us what the problem is with a full, busy life? Go ahead, educate us.

"Why are you so often looking for sympathy? You claim to be a Christian, but you don't talk like other Christians I've met who claim to ask God (not coffee) to successfully get them through whatever a given day might bring."

Sorry, but no. Again, you're wrong. Pat has NEVER asked for sympathy. Maybe this is you reading something into it. Maybe you feel sympathy for her, which is fine. But don't mistake your projected feelings on someone for them asking to be sympathized over. Again, Pat's a very capable, able, independent woman. She does not need or want your sympathy. Yours or anyone else's. She owns her own stuff. And maybe that's why you don't see her asking God to get her through things. God helps those who help themselves. Or maybe she just doesn't want to push her beliefs on others. She respects others as she expects them to respect her. I know this. I'm not a Christian, yet Pat and I have had many spirited and intelligent conversations on religion. No judging, just discussion. That's what adults do.

SEE PART TWO...

Tobin Elliotthttp://tobinelliott.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8864636609920150852.post-16048430718577491122012-10-13T20:50:19.474-04:002012-10-13T20:50:19.474-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Alison E. I try to write only about the interesting and funny stuff, and leave out the rest (computer games, time spent watching TV). The result is that I appear full of big plans, manic energy and sudden crashes. The real problem is that what I find interesting and funny doesn’t always jive with other people’s definition of "interesting and funny"; and sometimes, my self-deprecating humour can come across the wrong way. Ah well, I can’t always hit a hole in one, right?

As for being a Christian who uses the occasional crass word, I can assure you, this is way cleaner than what it used to be a decade ago; but I’m far from perfect. Improving oneself, no matter the creed or path, takes work, patience and time. And sometimes it takes a little exhortation from others, which is why I'm obliged to publish your comment and take some of your questions to heart. Chances are high that I will write a separate blog post sometime in the future about why I choose which words I do. In the meantime, I can only be an example of a tolerant, eager but imperfect Christian.Pat Flewwellinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03592227861710078906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8864636609920150852.post-2917451869039900872012-10-09T12:43:46.292-04:002012-10-09T12:43:46.292-04:00First of all, I wonder why in the world you need t...First of all, I wonder why in the world you need to write a blog entry to justify being sick and not taking pictures. Do you only have self-worth when you're so busy that you can hardly function, as so often you indicate? Why does your life have to be full beyond capacity? Why do you think your life has value only when you're busy - whether it's work, writing, the gym, church, the dog, friends, travelling, or whatever. You need your coffee or power drinks to get you through any given day. Why are you so often looking for sympathy? You claim to be a Christian, but you don't talk like other Christians I've met who claim to ask God (not coffee) to successfully get them through whatever a given day might bring.

And BTW, why would a nice Baptist Christian woman like you use the word 'fricking'? Most Christians I know are able to control their speech, even when their day is going badly. Your past writings have helped me to see Christians and Christianity in a different/better light, but today I am confused again. If you're supposed to be like Jesus, yes you'd have gay friends; and Jesus would probably have a drink with them too. But I don't think Jesus would use that nasty word, nor a few others that somehow slip into your accounts. Sure, use those words occasionally when writing about characters that may use that kind of language, but please don't do it when writing accounts about yourself - you'll continue to have respect from your readers. My respect for you has gone down a notch or two just because of that.

I believe your whole problem with being sick in Regina had nothing to do with hamburgers or dry air. It stemmed from your body not knowing how to go from 1000 mph to 30 mph in such a short time. It has not been allowed to relax, then when it had the perfect opportunity it couldn't.
